Purpose of the job:

De Lacy Academy are looking to appoint a Catering Supervisor to join our academy in October 2020, to support the Catering Manager in the provision of a high quality catering service through the effective supervision of staff.

Duties & responsibilities:

  • To supervise the day to day running of the kitchen and dining area(s) including catering staff duties.
  • To prepare and cook meals, using fresh ingredients wherever possible, for pupils and staff, which are nutritional, varied and well received.
  • To support the Catering Manager in planning menus to meet specification and recommended nutritional guidelines, including special promotions, ensuring food choices cater for special dietary needs for individual pupils and staff.
  • To ensure that all meals are produced by the recommended methods.
  • To ensure the required standards of cleanliness of the kitchen and servery area(s) and all equipment.
  • To ensure that the necessary standards of food hygiene are always met.
  • To assist with ordering of all commodities from approved suppliers and control of all stocks on site.
  • To assist with stock takes as and when required.
  • To support catering requirements for out of school activities, including educational visits, lettings and training days (given advance notification). This may involve events after school or in the evening, e.g. parents’ evenings.
  • To ensure that Health and Safety standards are always achieved.
  • To undertake additional Health and Safety training as necessary.
  • To ensure that all equipment failures are reported in a timely fashion to the Catering Manager for repair.
  • To support staff development in the essential job skills and help to encourage colleagues.
  • To promote a positive and supportive working atmosphere in the kitchen team.
  • To encourage pupils and visitors to use the catering facilities.
  • To promote an efficient and polite service and good customer relations.
  • To work closely with all staff to ensure a smooth and pleasant eating experience.
  • To complete all appropriate documentation and returns according to school policy.
  • To support on the job training and induction of new staff, as required and to highlight any beneficial formal training for staff with the Catering Manager.
  • To attend any staff meetings or training courses necessary to promote good working practices within the team.
  • To comply with the Academy’s Child Safeguarding Procedures, including regular liaison with the Academy’s Designated Child Safeguarding Person over any safeguarding issues or concerns;
  • To ensure strict confidentiality in all areas of work.
  • To work and process personal and sensitive information in accordance with Data Protection Act 2018 including the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) 2018.
  • To ensure work is conducted in a way that protects the safety and security of information (e.g. strong passwords, reporting breaches, securing paper records, securely disposing of records).
  • To understand and comply with the statutory guidance regarding safeguarding of children, ensuring the safeguarding and promotion of children’s welfare at all times, reporting any concerns to the Designated Safeguarding Officer immediately.
  • To comply with the Trust and academy’s policies and procedures at all times.


To undertake other reasonable duties (with competence and experience) as requested, in accordance with the changing needs of the organisation.

Experience and Knowledge

  • Maths and English GCSE grade C or above/or equivalent (A/I/C)
  • Level 2 Food Hygiene qualification (or willingness to work towards it) (A/I/C)
  • Basic Food Hygiene certificate (A/I/C)
  • Good knowledge of current food legislation in regards to food hygiene and health and safety in the workplace (A/I)
  • Practical experience of maintaining high levels of personal/general cleanliness and hygiene to comply with both school and statutory regulations (A/I)
  • Experience of effectively using kitchen and cleaning equipment (A/I)
  • The ability to work well in a pressurised environment (A/I)
  • Strong planning and organisation skills (A/I)
  • Able to relate well to children and adults (A/I)
  • Able to work constructively as part of a team and on their own initiative (A/I/R)
  • Commitment to self and team development (A/I)
  • Able to maintain a safe, calm and happy ethos (A/I)

  • The post holder will require an enhanced DBS (C)


  • NVQ level 2 Food Preparation and Cooking or equivalent qualification (A/I/C)
  • Practical experience of large scale catering (e.g. 350+ meals), preferably within an educational setting (A/I)
  • Practical experience of planning, preparing and presenting nutritional and varied food and beverages to the required standard within budget limitations (A/I)
  • Experience of providing timely and accurate management information (A/I)
  • An understanding and experience of responding appropriately to differing needs of pupils and adults (A/I)
  • Ability to write menus (A/I)
  • Good ICT skills (A/I)
  • Strong leadership skills, with the ability to develop yourself and your team (A/I)
