Purpose of the job:
The Laurel Academy are looking to appoint a Catering Manager to join our academy team in November 2021, the position is temporary in the first instance but could lead to a permanent position. The role will involve co-ordinating the provision of a high quality catering and events service through the effective management of staff and finance.
The Laurel Academy is an 11 -16 Academy of 660 pupils serving the town of Mexborough and its surrounding area. The Laurel has a rich history within the town since it was established in 1904 and has numerous notable alumni including Poet Laureate Ted Hughes. Mexborough is an ex mining town with a strong sense of community and some wonderful pupils. People who visit the Academy always comment on the excellent behaviour and conduct of the pupils and the welcoming ethos of the Academy. Duties & responsibilities:
- Responsible for the day to day running of the kitchen, dining area(s), the supervision of kitchen staff and planning of staff rotas.
- To prepare and cook meals, using fresh ingredients wherever possible, for pupils and staff, which are nutritional, varied and well received.
- Responsible for planning menus to meet specification and recommended nutritional guidelines and to include special promotions. To ensure that all meals are produced by the recommended methods and within a specified budget. To produce food choices that cater for special dietary needs for individual pupils and staff.
- Responsible for the general cleanliness of the kitchen and servery area(s) and all equipment.
- To ensure that the necessary standards of food hygiene are always met in relation to statutory regulations and school policy, including the completion of all HACCP documentation. To carry out internal checks against environmental health inspection standards.
- The ordering of all commodities from approved suppliers and control of all stocks on site. To ensure stock takes are undertaken as and when required. To maintain records in accordance with Financial regulations.
- Responsible for arranging catering requirements for all out of school activities, including educational visits, lettings and training days (given advance notification). This may involve events after school or in the evening, e.g. parents’ evenings.
- To ensure that Health and Safety standards are always achieved. To undertake additional Health and Safety training as necessary.
- To ensure that all equipment failures are reported to the Site Manager for repair and annual inspections are carried out when required.
- To assist in the effective implementation and promotion of the schools’ staff development policy. To develop staff members’ essential job skills and to help and encourage colleagues. To promote a positive and supportive working atmosphere in the kitchen team.
- To have good commercial skills to assist with business development.
- To work with the school to develop effective business planning.
- To promote the on-site service and encourage pupils and visitors to use the facilities. To liaise with pupils, staff and parents, responding to their ideas for healthy and varied menus. To work with staff to promote healthy eating in school, e.g. in class, via School Council.
- To promote an efficient and polite service and good customer relations. To work closely with all staff to ensure a smooth and pleasant eating experience.
- To complete all appropriate documentation and returns according to school policy.
- To liaise with the individual in the school who is responsible for the completion of personnel and payroll related documentation, to ensure prompt payment of wages.
- To ensure that all of the school’s procedures and systems are effectively maintained and updated as necessary.
- To carry out on the job training and induction of new staff, as required and to arrange any formal training with other appropriate providers. To attend any staff meetings or training courses necessary to promote good working practices within the team. To maintain training records.
- To promote the objectives of the school via the provision of a quality service which is efficient and effective at all times.
- To be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, inclusion, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person.
- To be aware of and support equal opportunities policies.
- To contribute to the overall ethos/work/aims of the school and Trust.
- To ensure strict confidentiality in all areas of work.
- To work and process personal and sensitive information in accordance with Data Protection Act 2018 including the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) 2018.
- To ensure work is conducted in a way that protects the safety and security of information (e.g. strong passwords, reporting breaches, securing paper records, securely disposing of records).
- To understand and comply with the statutory guidance regarding safeguarding of children, ensuring the safeguarding and promotion of children’s welfare at all times, reporting any concerns to the Designated Safeguarding Officer immediately.
- To comply with the Trust and academy’s policies and procedures at all times.
To undertake other reasonable duties (with competence and experience) as requested, in accordance with the changing needs of the organisation.

Experience and Knowledge

- Maths and English GCSE grade C or above/or equivalent (A/I/C)
- NVQ level 3 Food Preparation and Cooking or equivalent qualification (A/I/C)
- Level 3 Food Hygiene qualification (or willingness to work towards it) (A/I/C)
- Good knowledge of current food legislation in regards to food hygiene and health and safety in the workplace (A/I)
- Practical experience of maintaining high levels of personal/general cleanliness and hygiene to comply with both school and statutory regulations (A/I)
- Practical experience of planning, preparing and presenting nutritional and varied food and beverages to the required standard within budget limitations (A/I)
- Experience of effectively using kitchen and cleaning equipment (A/I)
