Senior Technician - Science
Purpose of the job:
To organise, deliver and develop technical services to the science department in order to support the teaching of a range of science subjects. To give advice, setting standards and ensuring these are maintained.
- To prepare and set up equipment and materials ready for its use in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and the requirements of teaching staff in the appropriate laboratory.
- To prepare and make teaching aids and demonstration models for use in the teaching areas, including all aspects of any new Scheme of Work.
- To ensure that hygiene and health and safety standards are maintained in the laboratory and preparation areas.
- To ensure the safety of all equipment, materials, laboratories and preparation areas, including:
- Annual testing of science apparatus
- Daily visual checks of gas, electricity and water supplies and turning them off at the end of each day
- Safe storage and disposal of hazardous apparatus and used chemicals
- Monitoring and maintenance of hazardous sources
- To undertake basic routine maintenance and minor repairs and cleaning of equipment and to assist in organising its servicing and repair as required in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
- To liaise with the Head of Department regarding more serious maintenance issues.
- To operate a safe and secure system for the storage and racking of equipment and materials ensuring that they are maintained in good condition and readily available for issue.
- To monitor levels of stock and re-order stock as appropriate.
- To assist in compiling inventories of equipment and materials as required in particular with regard to COSHH regulations.
- To assist in maintaining appropriate records, statistics and filing systems in accordance with stated requirements.
- To assist teaching staff with the general running of practical work sessions in a non-teaching capacity.
- To keep up-to-date with curriculum developments within the areas of the postholder’s responsibility.
- To undertake safety checks as required and comply with the requirements of Health and Safety procedures, COSHH and other relevant legislation and school documentation and keep records of checks carried out by all department staff.
- To clean and make safe spills, breakages and related incidents that requires careful handling.
- To carry out specific tasks as directed by the Head of Department during the academy holidays.
- To ensure all laboratories are clear at the end of each lesson and the academy day and are prepared for lesson 1 the next day.
- To ensure that appropriate records are kept of ordering of equipment, stationery and books when required.
- To attend departmental meetings when requested by the Head of the Department.
- To participate in training courses as required.
- To prepare display material as requested and maintain interesting and stimulating displays in laboratory areas.
- To assist with the duties of absent colleagues and ensure work left by absent teachers is delivered to the classroom as well as any other resources prior to the start of the lesson.
- To liaise with other departments and outside agencies in line with the Academy Development Plan.
- To participate in appropriate meetings relevant to the above duties.
- To carry out Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) of all electrical equipment in designated areas.
- To carry out Fire Marshall duties in the case of Fire and/or Emergency Evacuation.
- To comply with the Academy’s Child Safeguarding Procedures, including regular liaison with the Academy’s Designated Child Safeguarding Person over any safeguarding issues or concerns.
- To comply with the Academy policies and procedures at all times.
To undertake other reasonable duties (with competence and experience) as requested, in accordance with the changing needs of the organisation.

Experience and Knowledge

- GCSE Maths and English grades C or above (or equivalent) (A/C)
- A recognised and relevant vocational qualification (NVQ Level 3) and/or equivalent practical work experience (A/I/C)
- Willingness and ability to obtain and/or enhance qualifications and training for development in the post (A/I)

- Previous experience of working with young people preferably in a school setting (A/I)
- Previous experience within the specific curriculum area, in particular experience in electronics and/or physics would be an advantage (A/I)
